The personal statement is the only part of your application fully under your control — and the easiest to ruin. The most common failure is "CV retelling": rearranging your achievements in prose. Officers already have your CV; they want to know how those experiences shaped your academic direction.
An effective statement answers three questions. First, why this major? Use one concrete experience to show where the interest began and how it deepened — skip clichés like "passionate since childhood." Second, why this school? Point to specific courses, labs or professors that match your goals, proving you did your homework.
Third, why you? This is not bragging but demonstrating fit: how your skills and experiences equip you to succeed in and contribute to the program. Let facts speak — "led a three-person team to launch a campus book-swap platform in two months" beats "I have leadership skills."
Most programs expect 600–800 words. Revise at least three times: one pass to cut empty adjectives, one professional review for logic, and one read-aloud for flow. Great statements are rewritten, not written.
